X5 sunroof

I own a 2005 X5. It has a little over 12K miles on it, and has been well cared for. Just before Thanksgiving it rained and lo!...the rain came in. My BMW dealer was great. They took it in on an emergency basis, and after 4+ weeks they got a replacement sunroof cassette, which they installed. The Service Dept told me that the problem is not uncommon, and the factory has developed a new fix which requires replacing all hardware.

Fore-warned is fore-armed! In case it happens to your X5, don't let your dealer tell you that your car is the only one in the world that this has happened to.

Interesting. Mine has started 'popping' on the rear section when tilted. I wonder if it's the first sign of an impending problem.

Useful post.

I never noticed 'popping'. What I DID notice was WATER! When it rained in, it was time for a visit to the shop. And again, I was really treated well (and honestly) by the dealer.

Mine "pops" when tilting, as well. Also has developed a clicking noise when going over bumps. I love the pano roof, but the regulation small moon roof seemed to be a lot less trouble.

mine pops when opening too, especially after its' rained or has been washed. I think this friction between the large sheet and small window sheets is causing a much larget problem wit hmy roof now. I'm gonna disable the rear window from tilting somehow (probably just pull the motor's cable). Should solve problems.

My sunroof has something broken inside. It's under the level from the left back corner only, and it like swings and clicks when you push the front right corner. Is there a way to remove up the sunroof by unscrewing the six screws and lifting it up? I don't want to remove all interior as usual.

if your roof "pops" when tilting open as mine did open the roof all the way open and stand up in your back seat and take a look... Mine not only had all kinds of debris up there that I couldn't see when just standing next to the car but the also the area at the back of the larger front panel (where it touches that black plastic piece and meets the panel smaller panel when closing) was all dirty.. sticky dirty... I cleaned that whole area up around the panels and the edges of the panels themselves with soap and water (after vacuuming the entire panel area) then sprayed wd-40 on a rag and wiped down all the edges of the roof panels that come in contact with each other when opening or closing... that poping went away and it opens and closes now very smoothly...

Also - if your rear smaller panel is having issues its a simple unscrewing of 2 torx screws to unhinge the panel from the tilting bracket which will keep the 2nd panel permanently closed...

you can remove the glass out the top, the front section is held in with 6 screws behind the rubber accordian type cover. the rear section is a bit trickier to remove it is actually wider than the opening and must be tilted up and slid towards rear of car and out.

none of the mechanizms are servicable through the roof openings though with exceptions of the shades them selves.
