Which type Tranny?

Hi all,
How can I figure out which type transmission(A5S 360R or 390R) I have on my X? Is it printed/stamped on anything in the car? It is an '04 3.0 with the BLUE sticker(83220024359) on the tranny pan. I want to order a new filter/gasket set from AZ auto, but they specify that there are 2 diff types of trannys. Preparing to do a fluid change. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Steve

You have a A5S390R transmission for which Texaco ETL 8072B fluid was originally specified - whether you can find any is a different story. The dealer will probably supply you with Dexron VI.

I've used Valvoline Dex VI safely and most recently, Amsoil's.

I have service kits available HERE for the 3.0 X5 transmission, they utilize RedLine D4 fluid.

Phil, Thank You for the help! Just curious, how did you figure that out with what info I gave you?

FYI.....The dealer told me when I called them that Tex ETL isn't made anymore and to go with a Dex or Merc 6......That was straight from the Desert BMW parts dude's mouth to my ears.

Steve, browse to this pdf file to see what GM transmission we have:
http://www.automaticchoice.com/Catalogue/v_index.pdf
on the left menu, click on 'BMW'

I changed output shaft seal, transmission drive extension and transfercase output shaft seal today.
While i removed drive extension to replace the gasket, i dropped 1/2 liter of transmission oil and i decided to change filter, gasket and oil too. Transmisssion is very dirty at 90K miles. I should changed it earlier. I drained out >7 liters totally and refilled the same amount of fluid.
I bought 2 gallons of Dexron-VI at dealer for $90 ($45 for 1 gallons <=> $11.25 per quart)

When you are at dealer part dept. just giving them part# 83220024359 it will comes up with new part#: 83220397114. This is exactly for our X5. The newer fluid is for newer X5 (E70).

Wondering Dexron recommended us to change oil while BMW says it's Lifetime.
Here are 2 photos of fluid:
