Looking for a transmission shop recommendation in DC Metro area
I want to have the tranny diagnosed but more than likely go ahead and have it rebuilt too. ZF doesn't have a list of authorized repair centers (only suppliers). The following are what some ZF reps happened to dig up for me from my area. AAMCO Trans 301-585-0710 Superior Trans 301-587-0511 Montgomery Trans 301-251-7000 I have used AAMCO (not this same shop though) before in the past with a 69 Pontiac Firebird and a 77 Trans Am and no problems back then. Anyone else have any experience or comments about those shops - or any other in the area? Particularly as it relates to rebuilding the X5 transmissions. |

Tom, No biggie as we expect this with any vehicle sooner or later. Besides, even if repairs were $10K beats getting a replacement vehicle for 3x-4x that. The rest of the X is great. We''re happy owning the X and hope to keep it for a long time. MODS: Not sure if its on my end or not but I can't seem to post anything with emoticons. hey man, its been a while! sorry to hear about the X. before i bought my 4.6, i looked at one being sold at intersport performance near tysons. the X they were sellign had a ~$15K in repairs done to the transmission/drivetrain. the shop works on TONS of 911s, audi's and a lot of performance cars. i would imagine the transmission work they had done was top notch on their cars, i would call and see if they do it internally or if they have a shop they deal with and see if they can help.
good luck! Intersport Performance, 1524 Springhill Rd unit h,s, Mclean, VA, Used Cars for Sale, 703-242-8680 |

Looksl ike AAMCO doesn't have an in-house rebuilder for my tranny. They said they use another rebuilder that they sub that work out to. I don't really care who does the work as long as they know what they are doing and warrants it. They said it would be warrantied under AAMCO. Also contemplating getting a remanufactured tranny vs. rebuilding mine. I'm waiting on a price quote for the price difference. |

yeah, i hear they spring a leak often. if u need help doing all that other stuff, i can lend a hand...if im not busy changing daipers! it does take at least two full days so its not a quick procedure.

AAMCO quoted me $5,700 for remanufactured trans. + $1,045 to install = $6,745 (fluids not included in price).
Rebuild depends on what they find but got quoted a range of $4,500-$5,500. Most of what others here have quoted their rebuild cost around $3,500-$4,000. I assume the difference is they had the 5 speed 5HP24 instead of what I have - 6 speed 6HP26. Also, our area here is not the cheapest so I expected a price difference. I'm going to check at least one more place for quotes before I make a decision. Plenty of things to like about the remanufactured trans expecially less down-time with the X. I'll post an update later. |
