Oil thingy causing smoke in exhaust at idle

Wondering if anyone can point me to the post that talked about the aluminium section of the engine (Maze like part) that clogs up and causes the car to smoke when idling......

Looks like a maze and causes smoke, maybe the thread found HERE? In that gents situation it turned out to be a failed CCV. Which model E53 do you have?

Not sure which post, but you seem to be talking about the valve covers which have a "labyrinth" of channels for air/oil separation. They can become clogged and the resultant vacuum of oil = white smoke after idling awhile.

If smoking, I would start with the CCV's or oil separator valves first and then get into the valve covers.

That's the one, I seem to remember a post with a photo of the culprit but couldn't find it. Will take your advice and replace the valves and see how we go. Otherwise if that doesn't work may as well do a whole valve cover clean out and gasket replacement. Nice way to spend an afternoon
