You won't believe what the stealer tried to do!

Ok you won't believe this. I had to remove the water cooled alternator from my '01 X 4.4 for the fifth time. I tried to have it rebuilt but I was told that it cannot or should not this time. Well in the process, I broke a little plastic thermostat "thingy." I had no idea what it was called so looked on the BWMFANS website but couldn't find it. So I called the "stealer" (located in Sacramento, CA) to ask questions and get a part number.

The PN# is 17 10 7 559 966 and it is a thermostat for the alternator. I had to call a dismantler for the correct information and I can buy t for $83 at a foreign parts specialist.

Another note about dealers, I had a problem with my X in Phoenix. It blew a upper radiator hose. My wife was driving it to see her family. She managed to limp it in to a dealer. They charged me(her) $900 for a repair. Mind you that a hose only costs $70. Since a dealer touched it my alternator only lasts 2 months. I had it rebuilt it 5 times. But I was recently told that the alternator cannot be rebuilt. Is that true?

Wait. Something is missing.
What did they try to do?
They offered to order the part that costs $103. You found it somewhere else for $20 less. So, OE parts cost more, for $20 I would have gone with OE

And the dealer had to do more than a hose for $900. Its just not possible.
And what did they do with your alternator that you are blaming them for so many rebuilds? After the second failure I would start looking at the rebuilder.

I know going to the dealer sucks, but I can't see what they might have done wrong at this point.
Read your invoice more than just a rqdiator hose was done for $900.

And yes, just get a good remanufactured piece

I think his main point is that the dealer said they don't have a part number for the thermostat - even though they could get it for him.

Obviously, they knew what the part number was and decided to be not so helpful.

I don't blame the guy for not spending his money at that dealer.
