Engine and transmission ID/name

Where are they located/stamped on the X? How can I tell which engine or transmission I have (names?)
Is the engine N62?

BMW VIN Decoder - By Mitsuhiko Kanekatsu

Use the VIN decoder. Will save you a trip outside if you have your VIN handy.
