Parts Departing the X5 - I hate when that happens

On the way back from North Carolina this afternoon, I heard a "thump" on the back of the X5. Looked in the mirror and saw a white stip fluttering into the median. Stopped for gas later and confirmed that the hatch "spoiler" had come off. Looks like the driver's side bolt was loose(it was clean - no plastic on the threads) and the passenger side had broken off where the mounting boss meets the underside of the spoiler. AFAIK, it's never been off, so I'm guessing it was loose from the factory. Kinda' surprised that we never heard it rattle. Wife's more than a little ticked(it's her car) - she figures that, if you buy a nice car, then parts shouldn't fall off of it at 75mph...

I guess I'll find out what one of those costs tomorrow. Any suggestions for aftermarket pieces? Since I gotta' replace it anyway - might as well mod.

That's a bummer, first I've heard of that happening.

Check with http://vinesauto.com/ to see if they may have one off of a wrecked X5. You may get lucky and they have one in your color.

Also, here's an X5 that is being parted out on eBay. You could send a message to the seller to see how much they would want for that part - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2001-...spagenameZWDVW

Finally, check with Rob_ to see how much he can get you a new one for.

D: I kid about having to drag a bottom fishing catch net after my Harleys as I ride one of them down the road: they tend to vibrate parts off in the least convienent times, lol!

Never heard of the hatch spoiler tossing itself...I'm with your CEO: I'd be pissed,too.

Heh - we were getting ready for bed last night and a BMW commercial came on the TV. You know the one about how "BMWs hold their value" - to which my lovely wife snarked, "Yeh, but they can't hold their parts..."

Surprised me. I'm the snarky one - guess after 22 years, it's rubbed off on her.
