Someone talk me into changing my own trans fluid
I've done brakes, plugs, O2 sensors, and the big one, the oil filter adapter gasket. I've done plenty of American auto trannys with no issue-is this really much worse? I think it's the "fill it while it's running" part that worries me. Someone convince me!! Bill |

It isn't hard to do if that is what you are worried about. Use an OE filter, refill it, warm it up to check the level
One of the reasons it is so expensive is the liability, if the new fluid causes a problem. It isn't due to the complexity of the fluid change

I had to do it to my 3 series. I made up a pressure fluid transfer container out of a chemical spray bottle for your yard...lol. It works great. I hook my compressor up to it at about 10lbs. of pressure and it just flows right into the tranny.
I hope this helps. |

It is not hard at all. And the filling while running is only for a little bit. You first fill till it overflows with the car off. Then you start the car, go through the gears, pause in each for 3 sec or so, then jump under the car and fill up till it overfills again. The correct procedure is to use the GT1 to monitor the temp to be between 30C and 50C. But after doing it twice in my car, garage at 13C, which is 55F, it took about 4-6 minutes to get the trans oil temp to 35C. Oil will drip out during this time as it heats up. Then while still running, close the fill hole. Turn off car, clean up, and you are done.

I had done transmission fluid and filter 3 weeks ago for my 3.0. It's not difficult to change transmission fluid. When you replace filter, there are 2 seals/O-rings for filter and when you're pulling down the old filter, making sure the filter rubber O-ring is not stuck in transmission.
Recommend use Dexron - VI transmission fluid for only GM transmission (i guess your X transmission is GM) I can't imagine how dirty my X transmission fluid when i changed it at 90K miles. Fluid was dark and dirty with a lot of small metal dirts. Here is OEM transmission fluid for GM transmission with part number.

OK, you've got me convinced. I think I will buy Dextron VI like StartX5 mentions, since it is less expensive and also what the BMW dealer uses. I'll get one of those fluid transfer pumps that screws onto the bottle and should be all set.
A couple of questions--some filter seals are VERY difficult to remove from the case, and I have left the old ones in because of this. Is this the case with the X5 seal? Also, do I have to reset anything in the computer after the change? Thx, Bill |

Are the procedure steps written down somewhere?
