Unhappy Air flow meter

Hi Guys, I need your help My 2002 3l petrol X5 is running rough on idle and cuts off. I'v checked the plugs all ok but the Air Flow Meter(MAF) seems to be the problem, unplug it the car runs fine But Trans Failure program pops up on the dash. Can the Air flow meter(MAF) be cleaned, I'v put a new air filter still no joy. Please help
