X5 sounds serious!!

Hi guys,

I am new here but have been reading with interest since we purchased a 4.4l 2001 x5 with 68k miles on the clock from a car dealer.

It was great until today when it started making a noise very similar to that of a solenoid disengaging from a started motor but it doesn't stop and it is not the starter motor. The car stalled when this noise happened and then there was no drive from the auto box.

Anyone have any ideas.?

I am not familiar with four wheel drives and have never heard this before from any car.

Please please help.......the mrs is threatening that the car will have to go and I don't want to see the back of it...
