Further down the m/b there is a post, how to fix your outside door latch (carrier assembly), too late for me, I gave the local dealer $600 to fix this. IT IS NOT COVERED BY CERTIFIED PRE OWNED (CPO) Leave it to BMWNA to weasel out of this evidently common problem. In addition the TAIL LIGHTS ARE NOT CPO COVERED, I got a failure message and it cost me $175 for that little fiasco. I have just about had it with CPO, next time save the extra cost and go naked......

CPO's are overrated in my opinion. So many escape clauses. Not worth the paper they're written on

so what your saying is that since it is a common problem, that it should be covered under CPO?
CPO is strickly Body Electrical Failure, and PowerTrain, Power Steering, and Some Suspension Coverage, like wheel bearings, calipers, springs, and other non-wear parts. Things strickly mechanical like door handle carriers are not covered, wiring repairs are not covered, water leaks are not covered. However, that tail lamp is covered, Reference SI B 63 08 07, Repairs to the tail lamp are Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty, Certified Pre-Owned and Original Owner Protection Programs. |

YES, If there is a high failure rate this should be covered, at least by CPO
and, it seems that the tail light is only covered if the entire unit fails, but they WEASEL out by changing ONLY THE SOCKET. Don't get me wrong, I've owned over 25 BMW's in my 60+ years of driving and I am a 35+ year member of BMWCCA

I really dont get your logic here. The vehicle has a warranty for a reason to cover defects in parts and craftsmanship. The CPO warranty provided extended warranty to cover major failures after the original warranty has expired. If your out of warranty and its a common failure, but you are the original owner of the vehicle. Most of the times BMW will goodwill the repair for being a known issue. Other than that you are out of luck, the car's warranty does not last forever. However in YOUR case, the entire tail lamp IS COVERED under CPO. The bulbs, sockets, wiring and connector is not. NOBODY here CARES that you have owned and driven blah blah blah for so many years. Did you even get a CCA discount with your $175 repair? I have posted a bulletin that clearly shows that a tail lamp repair is covered under CPO, this bulletin was released when E53 tail lamps were on inter-galactic backorder and that repairing the failed tail lamps were the approved solution until parts are back in stock. Now that they are in stock, the CPO dealership should have no issues with replacing the tail lamp, and out of your pocket is $50. |

I replace the taillights with aftermarket LED ones and that problem should never happen again. I am glad that I can work on my cars instead of having someone else to fix it, Dealers or Indies. Door handle carrier cost me about $125 and 1 hr of my weekend time.

Daka,
I found your problem. You wrote that you take it to Lauderdale BMW. I used to live in South Florida for almost 20 years. Delt with BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Land Rover, from Boca down to Homestead. All the dealers down there are obnoxious, rude, and to top it off, no competition. They will nickel and dime you all the way to the parking lot. All major european brand dealers are owned by the same 2-3 people. In comparison, here in Los Angeles, most will bend over backwards to get your business. Yes, they are more expensive than an Indy, but at least they are cordial and "make you feel" appreciated. It's better a "Wham, bang, thank you 'mam," than 20 bucks on the night table the next morning and no goodbye!
