x5 2003 4.4i Tyre Control Inactive, which type?

Hi I have the message on my dash, tyre control inactive, tried checking all pressures and holding down the button, but the message just comes straight back. How can i tell which type of monitering system mine has ( I beleive there are two types)

any help?

Dunno...here in the Colonies, most of that year had the older style FTM, flat tire monitor, which noted tire/wheel rolling diameter via the ABS sensor.
It simply noted and warned when wheel dia fell below a certain dia/rolling circumference.

However, from memory, a few posters had the actual wheel sensor system, direct TPMSs in their cars; maybe a running change on certain models of Xs.

There are a few threads on how to re-set either system, using the Search Tab and plugging in various words.

I went to my dealers today, he says (without physically looking) that I have the sensor in each wheel system. I told him that I have some style 168 alloys on order and he said that the sensors may not work with those wheels as they are larger and will turn slower and he was conserned about the lower profile. I suggested I have the tpm system disabled, he aggreed and he was going to check if this can be done to remove the warning.
....thoughts?

A comment on his suggestions:

Lower profile wheels are not designed to not turn slower, the effective rolling diameter is the same, it is a larger wheel with a shorter tire sidewall height.

There may be other issues with those wheels and the physical size of the sensor, but if the wheel was originally offered it should work.

It seems to me that either a sensor has failed, or the controller that processes the signal from the sensor has failed. I would get a diagnosis to see which it is, and decide when you see the cost to repair whether it is worth it to you.

Hi thanks. I realise that the final diameter of the tyre will be the same, but the valve position will be half an inch twards the outside as the wheel is an inch bigger. I think your right he was worried also about physical space. However I have checked real oem and although the 168 wheels were not available at the time they are listed now as suitable, making me think I should have new tpm's fitted to the new wheels.

I asked the dealer if the tpm system could be de-activated or programmed out, he said that was not possible. from Jan this year the tpm system will form part of out MOT test. is the dealer correct or can the system / warning be turned off?
