What will happen if the X stands on a deflated air spring strut?
Hi there! Just wonder what will happen if the X stands on the air spring strut without proper inflated, but not be driven? Will the damper inside the air spring be damaged? If it happens, is it a must to replace the whole air spring strut? Thanks for advice.

Nothing. It should be fine.
There is a rubber stop inside that keeps it from totally bottoming out even when deflated. I replaced both of my front bags with Arnotts and had no problems. Driving it would not be advisable.

Isn't the Arnotts stuff refurbished OEM?

I guess Arnott uses new rubber to make the air bags and put it onto the old BMW shock struts they received from return of buyers or somewhere else.

I spefically asked them if they rebuild the strut as well as repalcing the air bags. They said that they do....

Yes they are. They require that you send back your old strut assembly as a core when you order a complete unit from them. I only purchased the bag portion when I replaced mine so I didn't have to send anything back to them. I think the core charge is $100 and refunded once they receive the old parts which must include the tiny o-rings for some strange reason.

The air bag shouldn't be left in that postion for too long because over the life of the bag it's inflated to basically one shape. when it's deflated it's in a different shape.
As the bag ages, the rubber gets hard and inflexible. When the bag is resting in it's new shape for an extended period of time, it could lead to cracking... EDIT: you Can replace just the air bag on the front strut but it's a PITA and if there is any fluid leakage in the strut itself then that would need to be replaced anyway. It's better to just replace the whole strut from Arnott. It comes with a really good warranty. |

I didn't find the airbag replacement to be a problem at all. In fact it's super easy. If you have already gone through the trouble of removing the wheel, tire, and strut assembly, swapping out the bag only takes about 5 more minutes. The instruction sheet from Arnott is very detailed with pictures and can be downloaded/viewed on their site.

Well, that's what I get for assuming...
If the bags are now inflated, I'd run it. I had my doubts about reusing my strut after driving on an deflated bag but it was fine and still is 10k miles later.
