E53 Headlamp confused

I have an 04 X5 4.4l purchased October 2011. We're heading on a long trip so trying to make sure everything works. However, I'm confused about headlamps. How many "halos" am I suppose to be seeing? The passenger side is out and I've ordered a new bulb. Also, The headlamps closest to grill on either side never come on.. is this normal? The only "full" lights are next to the marker lamps. They are both brights and dims. Are these halogen or HID.. It appears my "angel-eye" halos are the daytime running lights.

I have not had any success online finding any sort of diagram and the manual is not helpful.
