Rear License plate screws/bolts:
M5-8 in 12 mm length for your E53...from memory, the front screws are 5-25, depending on bracket. Any good autoparts store will have them. HomeDepot et al, have them in stainless, too. And, HD has a handy screw/bolt size deal for finding sizes. Oil Filter: most here use BMW OEM, some use Mann and other brands. Cheaper is not better, imo. Oil Change DIY: 2 excellent threads with pics...first is by TQ2K for a V8 but pics are very good: http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/...lvetronic.html This one is by Hayaku, for 3.0, also excellent: http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/...w-x5-3-0i.html I personally skip the ramp part and slide in and under. Have a serious sized catch pan ready, as those 8 qts of hot oil will be gushing out. All of the info to your questions can be found using the Search Tab upper right hand corner of any page and, the handy tabs top of any page that read: Articles How To's On Line References Such as: Xoutpost.com - Xoutpost.com x5tips.htm Searching, and reading some threads can help in the knowledge gain. That's my helpful tutorial for today... ![]() GL, mD

I concur with Dave up there. If you are buying a catch pan, better to get one that isnt enclosed up top and pitched into a hole. I cannot tell you how many times I've let that plug go and HOT oil starts flowing and as the oil hits the pan and starts creeping up past the reservoir until you notice the oil isn't going into the tank fast enough and then you reach into the hot oil and try to clear the blockage from the hole. Just get a pan with a big tank and is just open up top.
And what Dave was saying about the filter is right too. But don't get it off E-bay unless it says OEM from BMW factory. Best to just get it at the dealer. By the time you pick it up on e-bay and pay for shipping, it negates the cost of just getting it at the dealer.

Ok. I have a dealership 10 minutes away. So I'll just get it there on Monday. And I already have a big catch pan. Used it on my 2.8 liter Volvo before. I bought a big jug of oil. I believe there's 5 litters in there. So I'm going To get two more bottles, to get 7 litters for the oil change.
So I seen a USB/obd cable with a software disk for 40 on eBay, To read codes and stuff, anyone try that? |

Ok. I'll see, you know there's a reason they call the dealership a stealership. But if it's not a crazy price than I always buy OEM
