Is your OBC unlocked? If so, run TEST 13 (the gong test)...to see if you can get it to work. The PDC front sensors use the Check Control System's gong which is under the dash as you mentioned.

From SlickGT1 (Denis's) sig:
To view the OBC test: ) Key to ignition pos 2 (no need to start engine). 2) Fasten the seat belt to get rid of the “Fasten Seat Belt” message. 3) Press the right button on the instrument panel, and hold it until “TEST-NR. 01″ comes up (5 to 10 seconds). 4) Press the left button on the instrument panel, and the vehicle id comes up (last 7 digits of VIN). 5) Add up the last 5 digits to get the “unlock code”, e.g. the unlock code for “AB12345″ would be 15 (1+2+3+4+5). 6) Repeatedly press the right button until “TEST-NR. 19″ appears. 7) Press left button -> “LOCK : ON” 8. Repeatedly press left button until “LOCK : xx” appears, where “xx” is your unlock code. 9. Press the right button. All modes are unlocked now. You have low cluster and not high cluster S? Have you had the car coded at all? I had the "key in ignition" gong turned off via coding so that it would stop dinging when I was cleaning out my car interior or drying off the car and had my doors open after washing, so now when my door is open it does not display "key in ignition lock" nor does it chime anymore. If you have the display still then maybe you need to "Test the gong" lol

TIP: if you turn the ignition to position 1 (instead of position 2) you won't have to fasten your seat belt.
![]() Here's a link that has the instructions for the low cluster. Since there's only one button on the instrument cluster, and there's no 20 digit alpha/numeric display...the UNLOCK procedure is slightly different as well as how the info is displayed in the cluster. Scroll down past the high cluster info and click on the thumbnails for the low instrument cluster to see a brief description of each TEST and what you will see in the display: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/313409...series/page-6/ ![]()

Thanks RB! Yeah, I do have the low cluster.
I've only done minor things with BMW scanner 1.4.x (lights, cluster pref tweaks) but I did see that there was a gong option in the IKE that wasn't checked...I didn't think anything of it until I was working with the PDC stuff the other night (which, BTW does not work again since the other rear corner sensor decided to pack it in). I read a post from xbimmers.uk? (i think) that mentioned something about the gong error and pdc acoustic generator being interconnected through that coding option for the gong. I just wanted to make sure that it was indeed referencing the same part. Edit: As always, thanks for the post QS!

Apparently it helps if you plug the connectors Into the unit rather than leaving them dangle. Who knew?
Anyways, the acoustic generator and gong errors are all gone and everything sounds like its functioning normally once again.

Good it was just that!
I wish all BMW gremlins are as easy as an unplugged cable

Totally agree. The last gremlin I had ended up with me tracing wires from the rear fuse panel up to the center console telephone pre-wire where the wires were broken right in the hinges of the arm rest, causing them to power up unrelated circuits. But of course that was found after removing most of the interior to trace the wires along the floor.....that one was a real bastard.
