Angry Liftgate

Ok...this has been driving me nuts since I got my X5. It's sitting unlocked, I go to open the liftgate and it's locked, so I walk to the driver's door, open it, push the button to unlock the liftgate, close the door, hear a click noise (it's the liftgate relocking itself), reach to open the liftgate, and it's locked.

WHY DO I HAVE TO KEEP THE DRIVER'S DOOR OPEN SO IT DOESN'T RELOCK THE LIFTGATE???

Sounds like the common liftgate switch problem. Usually, people have the open problem of having the liftgate randomly opening. Anyway, you probably just need that strip on the outside of the switch replaced. Moisture gets in there and causes electrical problems.

May also need the electrical connector replaced if corroded...SIB 51 50 01

So this doesn't happen to everyone? I'm confused.

Very common on earlier model X5s. I think we went in for this 3-4 times, while in warranty. No problems for the last year.

What I believe is happening is that with the hatch released from the button and closing the door, the air pressure from closing the door pushes the hatch up a little and the weight of the hatch coming back down closes it. Try it without closing the drivers door and walking to the back and see if it is open.

Problem? BMW would say that it's a "feature"

Happens all the time to mine. Its definitely not a malfunction of the hatch assembly. I agree that it has everything to do with changing the air pressure in the cabin as you shut the door sucking the hatch back down. Thats why it still happens even if you close the door gently. I am to the point that I dont even use the hatch button on the dash. I close the driver door and open the back using the remote switch on the key.

Happens to me all the time.

I finally have resorted to using the remote or the switch on the liftgate.
