Reset the code and see if it returns or if the 4x4 code comes back. If the light is on I'm pretty sure the front wheels are disconnected. It would be logical for that code to shut things down to protect the gearbox.

If the fault does come back you need to do the TC fluid. It's only 1 qt and only use BMW TC Fluid oil. Pretty straight forward easy job probably easier than an oil change actually.
What it is that it has a sensor to measure the clutch position and when the fluid shears or wears I guess it doesn't meet certain requirements so triggers a fault code. Mine probably needs it done too at 117k but haven't gotten a code yet. |

DEFINITELY do as is recommended, change the transfer case fluid with genuine and reset (tell the car you changed the fluid). BTW, also a good idea to do so with both differentials the transmission itself and the power steering. Lifetime fluids (regardless of car mfr) are not lifetime - they are a good idea and excellent value for the first and second owners, but a disservice to subsequent owners.

I've just done the transfer case service (last weekend). Didn't have a code or anything but after 220,00kms I figured it was overdue...
Dead easy. Crack open the fill port before you drain it, just to be sure it can be opened. It's hard to get a torque wrench on the drain bolt when closing it up - tight enough will have to do. You'll need a fluid pump too - makes the job a lot easier and cleaner. And yes, you'll need to have a laptop with DIS to reset the code and reset the oil wear adaptations. If you don't have the kit to do this, get a decent indy or a dealer to do it for you. Here's a great video on the whole task... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ol4PofF-fZY
