What does these things do?

I think these are called headlight shrouds( see pic with arrows), but what do they do?

Will it affect the beam pattern, or something if they were removed?

I think they are the beam formers and will very definitely affect the pattern if you remove them.

The Euro lamps with the clear fronts have the beams formed by the mirrors and shape of the projector lenses so don't need the fresnel lenses on the front.

It seems removing the plastic lenses is quite a popular mod in the US and since you guys don't have MOTs (annual vehicle checks for cars older than 3 yrs) I guess they would never get picked up as being safe or not.

Has anyone performed this mod in the UK or Europe and subsequently passed the MOT?

To me it seems they are useless, however they must have a reason to be on the vehicle. Maybe they are there to protect the bulbs or something, who knows...

If BMW spent the money to put it in every X, I would assume it serves a purpose.

It's a diffuser and they are there to keep light going to where it shouldn't. In this case, to prevent blinding oncoming traffic. If you look around, you will most cars have them and, not only for the headlights but at the rear of the vehicle as well.
