Time for new tiressss

hey guys,
its time for me to get new tires as i am starting to slip and slide in the rain...lol
i have an 02 x5 3.0 with the stock wheels, 17 inch, and the michelin energy mxv4 plus tires. i was wondering what you guys recomend i go with, the michelin's again, or some other brand that i can use for the winter season only, as i am going to be purchasing 20" rims in the spring that i am going to use only during the good weather months. input apreciated!!!
Thanx in advance

I would say go with the Michelins. I have the 20" Rims with Michelin Tires here in Southern Cal.

Since you plan on getting 20's in the spring and you live in NJ where, presumably, you get snow, I'd get a set of dedicated winter tires for your 17's. Bear in mind that if you do that you have locked yourself into a new set of wheels and tires in the spring. That might be a good thing though. "Sorry honey, I've got to buy those 20's."

There are some good snow tires out there. Do a search of this forum as this was probably discussed a couple of months ago. When you do get your 20's, go with the Michelin Diamaris, Toyo Proxes S/T, or the new Scorpion Zeros. I have the Proxes in 19" and like them very much. They are also cheaper than the Michelins.

Up here, the suburbs of New York, the winters are bad. I had the stock 19's on my X5 and just purchased a set of OEM 17's. Just last week I put some Pirelli Scorpions on. Let me tell you that the ride is so much smoother and the tires grip great on snow, ice, rain, and in the dry. Cant go bad with them.

Go get a set of Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow for your 17's so it can serve as your dedicated snow tires and as Kevin said, gives you a legitimate reason to get the 20's!

Best of both worlds.

I'm partial to OEM since BMW's are generally high performance vehicles and they test the vehicles with OEM parts/wheels so I feel it's safer going with OEM.

I agree with all the above. Pirelli Scorpion Snow&Ice, Bridgestone Blizzak, and Nokian Happaplietta were most recommended in other related threads. I bought Blizzaks in NJ. They are working out great here in ID. I,too, recommend OEM rims. Typically, they are actually lighter than aftermarket rims. Though you may want to think of 19" rims vs 20" as NJ roads are really some of the worst in America. I've lived and worked there most of my life. I understand about the high volume of traffic, but that does not change what they actually are.

Check out Tirerack.com They currently have some Michelin Pilot Alpins they have on closeout for $79.00 per tire. They might be perfect.
