4.6iS/4.8iS Tire and Differential Gearing Speed Calculator

Having trouble attaching an excel file that I made, so if you would like the calculator, just shoot me a PM with an e-mail address! (The file has tabs with both standard and metric scales.) I'm considering going from the factory 3.91 front and rear differentials to the Performance Gearing 4.44 front and rear (limited-slip) differentials. I wanted to know what cruising speeds and etc were, so I did some chicken-scratch math on a cocktail napkin. Here are screenshots of the data:

4.6iS OEM Tire and OEM 3.91 Differential Gearing

4.6iS OEM Tire and "Performance Gearing" 4.44 Differential Gearing

Now I'm really interested in those 4.44 front and rear differential gearsets.

Can't sleep.... so I went ahead and crunched some numbers for the 4.8iS 6HP26 transmission.

Weasel will become famous soon enough
So for the 4.6is we're looking at about a 500rpm difference in 5th at ~80mph... that ain't too bad, but would kill the gas mileage. I only get about 16.5 to 17.5 on the highway at that speed already, and I suspect it would bring me down to 14-15 mpg... But who am I kidding, this is far off the scope for me anyways with all the other shit going on in my life financially right now. Too many other projects.......

I've searched for hours and hours trying to find info on the 4.6iS front "VAG 174" differential and the "HAG 188K" rear differential. Didn't come up with much. The closest thing I could find for 4.44 gears that *should* work in the rear "mid-size" case was the 3310 8282678 RUMPF LL HA-GETRIEBE I=4,44 in one of the BMW Motorsports catalogs. The E70 3.0si has 4.44 gears yes? But I highly doubt that's the case. Haven't left many stones unturned on the 'net, but came up empty handed. I'll just kick back and wait for an e-mail from the pros at PG on Monday.

I hear ya on the projects thing Weasel... man tax-time dollars are burning a hole in my pocket already! That's no good!

Did anyone ever find out if 4.44 diffs or gears out of 3.0 are plug and play in a 4.6?

Maybe contact KMS or Jim Blanton. I bet they'd know.
