Anyone permanently "plug" roof rail holes?

I recently Joined the roof rail delete club. I have the black plugs in for now, but was entertaining the idea of a more permanent solution.....The rails are never going back on the truck. I was thinking along the lines of TIG welding them up and re-shooting the whole roof. Anyone gone a route like this?

Thats the route I plan to take. Im a bit concerned about whether or not welding in the holes can be done without warping the surrounding material as its a bit on the thin side.
