Exclamation SES Light Finally Goes Off - P0344

Update: 8/12

Replaced the CPS with the genuine BMW parts from BMW Bloomfield NJ. Works so far so good.

Hey Guys,

Long time no see. Insanely busy taking care of the newborn lately. Well, while I was thinking what a fantastic job my 01' X5 3.0i is doing transporting my boy, now it threw me a beautiful SES light.

Checked with local Advance Auto Part. P0344 - Camshaft Positioning Sensor "A" Circuit Signal Intermittent (B1)

Past symptoms: 3 time last year plus 2 times this year, the engine will stall at low speed, sometimes happened over a speed bump, at very low speed, then SES light up. And the car lost all the power. Since it's low speed, I could just take control and start it up again, problem gone.

Yesterday, while I was driving, the SES light lit up, but the car is still running strong. No sign of lost power. Read the code, P0344.

1st round of research, I gotta replace the Intake camshaft sensor, correct? I just want to be sure the symptoms match the code, and you guys' advice is greatly appreciated.

Gotta feed the baby, but I'll check back tomorrow. Any idea or suggestion, please leave a feedback. Again, thanks!

Best,
Lei

Hey Lei!

Yup! classic signs of the CPS failing. Easy DIY as I did both on the wife's 03 3.0 a couple weeks ago.

Hey, Big "J", thanks a lot for the confirmation. I was trying to be cheap just to change the exhaust side first, since it's much cheaper. But looks like let's do it once and do it right!

Will order the part from Bavauto today. Do you think JL Germany Brand is equally as good as Genuine BMW brand? $40 difference. (Being cheap again.)

Thanks,
Lei

Hi Big "J",

Is it possible that it's the Exhaust CPS?

Hi Lei!

You can just change the one for now and see if you still have the same problem. I bought Febi/ Bilstein CPS units but, Bosch is the choice for most.

Good Luck!

I would ONLY use Bosch (or BMW) parts..... I have had reports of low quality 3rd world copies which are very low quality.

And you CANNOT know where they were made based on the BS 'euro/German sounding' names the market under....

Thank you, Sir. I almost placed the order for the JL Germany brand. Sounds like I'd better off ordering the genuine BMW parts from bavauto.com

One question: Anywhere else has lower price than Bavauto? Their price is $108 + $12 Shipping, which is $120 total.

Thank you!

Give Craig at Bloomfield BMW a call or email him. He has beat every price, on every part, that I have purchased.
