Vacuum line with no home

Just picked up an 04 X5 4.4i Saturday. Overall it is in very good condition, but I have one little item I cannot figure out. There is what appears to be a vacuum line just hanging out in the front area of the engine that doesn't seem to have a termination point. Is this supposed to be here?

I just asked the exact same question today and TwinTurboGTR quickly gave me the following answer:

That hard black plastic hose is a breath tube for the transmission, it doesn't connect anywhere. It belongs under the Acoustic cover.

Thanks. I search for 30 minutes earlier and couldn't find anything on it.

Just found your thread and from that have determined that this line is different than what you listed. This one is further forward in relation to yours.

Different motor. Mrathel is a 2000 4.4 with a M62 motor. Yours is a 2004 4.4 with an N62. Location will be different. But serves the same purpose

To me it seems more like a breather hose
