While I am under the Intake Manifold....

...what parts are worth replacing?

I'm goin in there and could really use some advice.
The Oil Separator system is on top of the list.
The obviouse (intake gasket, o-rings ..)
This is where I am headed in search of the multiple cylinder misfire.
Thanks Team!

As Dallas mentioned, get the vally pan gasket - its all one piece. You remove the umpteen bolts, remove, replace and back your way out. The Rear cover on the intake is easy to take off once the intake is on your bench. The HARDEST part is attaching the 3 inch hose that weaves through the rear of the engine and attaches to the hose exiting the OSV. (BMW refers to the OSV as the cannon shaped piece) I always thought it was the piece on the rear of the intake.

Good luck with that hose, its a bitty! Watch those knuckles.

Hey Skid,

If you look on my DIY for the Valley Pan, there is a complete parts list for EXACTLY what you are looking for. It is spot on, lol. "I imagined myself saying that in a English Accent" It also depends; if you are doing the VPG, on which side you plan on going after. If you plan on going through the front, you should replace the Water pump, 4 o-rings for the water pipes, gasket, and thermo. If you plan on going from the back, then 2 gaskets for the water manifold and 4 o-rings for the water pipes.

Also after typing this out, do you have a 4.4. This is all if you have a V8 motor, if not, none of this applies, lol.

Great Stuff guys! (Bimmer Girls are certainly welcome! )

Its a 4.4 @165K mi. Sweet runner. And this is from a guy who's first BMW was a 92 750iL. (you find yourself saying "I'll take 2 of those" with the V-12).

Thanks!

Does valley pan gasket only apply to 4.4 + or does it apply to 3.0 as well... probably going to get flamed for this question.

Haha. It's an honest question - no flaming necessary!

I'll elaborate TwinTurboGTR's post a bit...

As TT said, the valley pan gasket only applies to the V8 cars. The valley pan is the pan that sits in the "valley" between the two cylinder banks (inside the 'V' of the engine). Because the 3.0 is not a V-engine, it doesn't even have a valley, much less a pan for the valley.

Here's a picture so you can have a "visual":

As you can probably guess, the valley pan is that piece of bare aluminum sitting in between the two cylinder banks (I'm pretty sure that it's actually the engine block). Obviously, the valley pan gasket goes around the perimeter of the valley pan and seals the valley pan cover to it.

Here's the valley pan cover installed on the valley pan:

Hope that helped...

M52 motors or any I-6 for that matter doesn't have a Valley pan gasket. Only the V8 model line.
