Knock, Knock

My wife has 2000 X5 3.0i and the front end bushings needed replaced. I ordered and took two weeks to find time to change. While we were waiting for the time and parts I instructed her to not drive and so it was parked for the two weeks. Easy rebuild on the front end and went to drive in for the alignment and there is a random knocking on the top of the engine. The knocks are 1, 2 , 3 , 2, 1. No pattern but a knock not a ticking. New to BMW the car has 157k and was tight and quiet before parked. Any ideas? Thanks much for your time.

No idea on the knock, but hold onto that x5. You may have the only 3.0 ever made in 2000. As far as I knew, the 3.0 wasn't introduced until model year 2001. (my 2001 x5 3.0 has a build date of 9/2000 but is still titled as a 2001)

I have listened to alot of video on the web and the sound mostly seems like a vanos problem. Any advice?

Describe your knock in more detail. This is an engine related knock? Rather than suspension or transmission? Does it sound like the motor is "missing"? Vanos issues can sound like marbles in a can sometimes. Take a video if you can.

It does sound like marbles in a can but random, goes away with RPM. I can not make a video for now. The belt came off on the way home from work and there is an oily substance and all of the antifreeze blown in the engine compartment. Looks like it blew a hose, I will start working on it this weekend.

It could potentially be the DISA valve which regulates intake air. The flap can break and therefore rattle; very common issue and is a very easy DIY to replace. I would suggest placing a screwdriver on the unit and place your ear against the handle of the screwdriver to listen if that is the source of the rattle. I don't have any pics if the location of the DISA but a search of the forum will give pics and more info.

I missed the first what are , vanos, and DISA, When I start my x5 not every time it does knock for 1-3 seconds, is this a normal thing, I was told it can be the timing chain, and I have an oil leak but has not been figures out as of now ??? Any suggestions what the leak is from, vavle covers have been changed, so does this offer this info, and are any additives, that are yes or never ??
