Radiator Blown ?

I am driving home today from work and the check engine light came on and I here a clicking noise. I notice my temp gauge is pegged red and there is a 'fluid' spraying the side of my car..

Luckily I am only 500ft from home and now in driveway the car is leaking radiator fluid like a mad man.

I find the culprit ( I think ) and took a picture. Its not the radiator, but the assembly beside the radiator..

In this picture you can see the 6" crack..

Thoughts/Options on what this is, and how to fix ?

Thanks.

I am assuming you have a 3.0. You can DIY this, no need to bring it in to the shop. Expansion tank is cracked. Might as well replace hoses as well.

Please plan you info in your sig such as I have.

Check engine light came on because the motor was running to hot probably. Once you fix it, it should go away. How long was the needle pegged red before you stopped the motor?

If you check the "Articles section" The DIY for a 3.0i should be in there.

Alright - update time.

I towed it to a local BMW repair shop and got the expansion tank replaced and themostat replaced. 422.00

I picked it up the next day.. only to make it 3 miles down the street. Got towed back.
Result - found out the water pump was bad which caused pressure build that cracked the tank. New water pump and labor- 223.00

Picked up and drive home. everything is great.
Next day - driving to work ( fortunately I drive by the repair everyday ). It overheats again...

Apparently the 'transmission coolant" hose popped off ?
No charge...

Keep your fingers crossed I am done.
