I think it's a secondary place to put the jack without having to climb in and strap it in behind the spare. I could be wrong, but it fits!

Yeah, my first thought also, the supplied jack seems smaller but I'll give it a go (maybe open the jack up a bit) when the freezing rain stops...

Storage for the BMW OE tow ball. Only fits the demountable Euro towball.

Realoem. Item 2. Lots of info if you search. Metric ball, not US certified. Some have used it here regardless. It should be the standard hitch for you in Europe.
