When did the pano roof get more reliable?

I know the earlier models had troubles with linkages breaking and water leaks. Are the 2004 and newer vehicles better? Looking to buy a 2004 and would prefer not to bother with this roof but it looks harder to find a loaded 3.0 that does not have one.

The pano roof never got more reliable. Like many of these ideas that BMW improved certain common failure points of the E53 as time moved on, they stayed the same. With the few exceptions being replacement parts added to old and new on failure, common hardware failure like window regulators, transmissions, the N62 motor's valve guides, seals, and coolant return pipe, sunroofs, etc were only perceived to be more reliable in later cars because the earlier ones had the first chance over time and mileage to expose them as failures.

Ours has been totally reliable, but I only opened it once (to check it worked) in over five years. I consider it a fixed moonroof. Works great in that mode.

I haven't touched mine since I got it. I don't want to find out if it works or not. It looks fine the way it is. Last thing I need is a pin to snap, the headliner to fly off and then it starts raining. It's there, it's a hole in the roof, and when it comes time to sell it, if ever, I will us it as a selling point. "Ahh, you see that monstrous sliding pano roof? It is so cool. Ya open it and enjoy the sun!!!" That was extra money as an option ya know, lol

Pano was one of the selling points for me. Love using it and try to use it as much as possible.

Owned since 33K and is now over 90K.

Apparently "venting" it is what causes failure. I use mine all the time. It's all good

2006 E53 4.4i - Purchased with 96K 6 months ago, 4th owner. Everything still works and runs like new. That is why I made the purchase. Sunroof is not an issue. Keep it lubed and clean. As with everthing else. Maintenance and attention....not issues. Best car I have ever owned even with 96K miles.

Selling point for me too. I love it. Use it whenever possible. I use all of it's functions too. Even the auto shade.

i generally only use the vent function, i find it to noisey and buffeting with the roof open

and i clean tracks as needed

i also think living in a mild climate probably helps
