Oil Change

Ok...here's my "Girl Question"
How often should I get the oil changed in my X? Will the lil light things tell me when it's time?

Lights will tell you when BMW recommends the oil to be changed, which will be about every 15,000 miles (give or take, depending on your driving style). I would suggest an intermediate change around the 7500 mile mark.

Note: moving this to the X5 forum

Recommend one time at halfway before all the lights go out, between 3 and 2 green lights and then at the scheduled time when the lights turn yellow....you'll average an oil change every 7500 miles or so. Use the BMW Synthetic 5W-30 or any other synthetic oil similar to it.

P.S. Dang, Ucrew, you beat me to the punch again!

I personally decided on every 5000 Miles. I have an indepandant BMW shop who does the work in between dealer visits. I believe 15,000 miles is too long between oil changes. Since I'm buying mine not leasing i'm a bit more concerned about keeping things on the up and up.

Whoops...I thought I posted that in the X5 Forum! (must be the sinus infection)

Thanks...I'm almost to 7,500 since the last change. Got a little freaked when I realized...I've always aimed between 3,000 & 5,000 with my Grand Cherokee, but knew the X could go further. 15,000 does seem waaaay too long in between!

Thanks again!

7500 oil change interval is what I follow and IMHO is perfect interval.

The X5 uses alot more oil than the Cherokee - I also used to change syn oil every 3-5000 miles in my Broncos and van - the X5 indicators adjust to the type of driving you do - I've got almost 9000 miles on this oil change and still show 3 green lights (alot of interstate driving in the last 2 months) - On second thought, I think I'll have it changed the next time it's in the shop - It still boils down to doing what feels right to you

Please clarify this. Do you mean that it burns oil, or that the X5 has a bigger oil capacity? If it's the latter then I agree, it takes about 8 to 9 quarts when you do an oil change. If it's the former, them my personal experience runs counter to this. My engine doesn't burn a drop of oil

No, I'm just talking quantity - I have never lost oil in my vehicles after switching to synthetic - my previous vehicles only needed about 6 quarts ( 5 + the oil filter ) - I always replace the oil filter when changing the oil
