No one wants to be in the hot seat?

Driver side heated seat gets really hot on the left side towards the door and the back of the seat to the point it stings. This happens on the 2 & 3 setting. You can barely feel setting 1 heat so I usually keep it on 2 or 3.

Any thoughts?

Mine are also hot as hell on 3. I feel it one one as well, and keep it on 1, at least when I do turn it on.

Elements are cracked and you will begin to see scorch marks on the leather. Some have had luck with "goodwill" replacement through BMW. If not, you will have to boot up the cash to replace the lower cushion.

Has anyone attempted to take the seat cushion apart and can those elements be replaced? Has anyone seen a DIY for this? x5 or any other BMW?

Some of the e38 forums have discussed this topic...there should be something on e38.org BMW 7-series information and links ...if you do a page search [Ctrl+F] to help find the link on the page...try something like "heated seat broken wire repair" as your search phrase.

I had this exact problem a year ago and then i got burnt by the seat, badly. I got my seat bottom replaced for free. you cn not replace just a wire. you need to buy a new seat bottom which has the wire sewn into the leather. Thank god I got it replaced for free.

Did you get it replaced under Warrenty or Goodwill?

Isn't this a safety hazard that should be covered by manufacturer regardless of in or out of warranty? Looking for members thoughts?

One can always try an appeal to BMW NA (in this case)...but if the answer is no and you don't want to pay for a new seat or "skins" with the wiring sewn into it...it can be repaired DIY style. Again, there are a couple of DIYs on e38.org of owners removing the seat & peeling back the leather to repair (not replace) the broken wire.

EDIT: Here's another DIY found on Bimmerforums e38 board: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum....php?t=1165042

(you can see how the broken wire was found, and resoldered to fix the issue)

BTW...this is issue and the front passenger seat occupancy mat sensor is the reason why I NEVER kneel on the seat and will IMMEDIATELY stop any passenger from placing their knee in the front seats for any reason.

My reasoning is that placing a knee on these seats puts a high concentration of weight on the heating sensor wires and occupancy sensor wires which causes them to fail/break. I may be over-cautious but it does seem plausible in my small mind.
