4.8is burped coolant: is this common? Coolant light now on

W/o having it in front of me, the landlord noticed a 2' diameter pool of coolant under my X5 when I left yesterday, and my coolant light came on yesterday as well.

I've had a Porsche or two that's burped coolant for no known reason, without faults to the cooling system: just wondered if the X5's did it too.

Is there a special coolant mix that everyone will point guns at me for NOT using??

Mark

I do not think this is common on BMW to "burp" coolant

Get the blue dealer coolant. It cost a bit more, but once you dilute with distilled water, the price is usually better than the off the shelf autostore stuff. Plus it is meant to keep the system clean and running properly.

Are you sure you don't have a leak? Cooling systems notoriously weak on most BMWs...

Check your coolant expansion tank located on the driver side closer to the front. They are notorious for cracking and leaking (check the bottom of it). Also, check the all hose connections. Report back?

No more leaks since then, but can see where it sprayed all over the engine compartment. Thermostat stuck a little or vent in cap clogged??

haircrack somewhere in the plastic body - check the direction where the white residue is coming from, your crack is there... a hose may have cracked at the clamp area... get it fixed now, before your engine parts are scattered on the highway due to overheated block/blown gaskets...

Ok, leaks again: my little LED light on a flexible stick & a dental mirror show a continuous wet spot on the underside of the tank, so a new one went on this am from my trusty independent shop across the street: $170: not too bad. BMW quoted $127 just for the reservoir.

I paid under $100 for the reservoir with new cap and level sensor from BMW of Bloomfield. Install takes 15 min. I guess $170 isn't bad.

Normally I would have done it myself but scheduled to drive out of town in it tomorrow...so yeah, it was necessary to address it today.
