Engine has a strange sharp noise, should I be worried?
Thanks. Will try to find out how to upload the sound file later. If not I'll just shoot a video and upload to youtube since there's a youtube button here. Happy holidays! |

i suspect that your suspicion is correct.. if this is not vacuum hissing, it is probably the chain guide rails...

Thanks terminator! Do you know approximately how much it will cost to get it replaced at a professional shop? The dealer is not too far away but they always charge me way too much even for a small job. Thanks again.

the parts are couple hundred bucks... the labor to open up engine?... that can be expensive... i do not know how many hours it would take but would suspect at least 10 hours, if not 20... there were people here who had done this, lets see if theyv will pitch in...

Wow, sounds like $2000+ job. Labor charge at least $1500. So if you DIY, you have to lift the engine out and open it up? Guess I have to go to a shop for this kind of job.
By the way, is there a easy way to find out whether it's the guard rails or not? If I drain the oil and take off the oil pan, should there be some guard rail debris in there? The noise is more like a high pitch "hiss". |

Without hearing it I really can't tell. Bad water cool Alternator($950)? That was my case a few years ago. It also could be those pulleys too. water pump...

bulkwarrior, post a sound clip. There's no way to accurately describe sound with words.
I'm not familiar with the N62 engine but I don't think you need to lift the engine out for this job. You do have to open up the front end though. If it indeed the guide rail, you will see debris in the oil pan. GL!

Maybe it's just a serpentine belt or something(does this car even has a serpentine?)
I used to have an old car whose serpentine belt squeals in the winter, and it sounds a little bit like that. |

Take the soundcover off and try to pinpoint where the sound is comming from. It Sounds like a serpintine-belt or the bearing in one of the pulleys.
(if your 06 is an old truck like you say than mine is a dinosaur )
