Glad that we were in an "X" !!!

Yesterday - 07:00 am - raining - dark - driving into a tunnel.......
Big bang - glass raining all over us - have been sucessful to keep the line in the tunnel after that - somehow good luck.

At the end we have found out that a truck coming from the opposite has lost a huge ice cube which crashed perfect into the windscreen of the X.

Somehow you feel like: why am I there exactly in that second?
But also: glad to sit in such a car!!!! Most others would have a destroyed windscreen and some seriously hurt people inside.

Happy New Year to all of you !!

Helmuth - so sorry to see that! Hope that wasn't the tunnel going into the Zillertal?

We're in Mainz tonight and we'll be going through that tunnel again on Saturday! (Last minute decision to go to Fuegen just before Christmas. )

Hope the X recovers.....

WOW! close one! glad to hear all are okay. continued safe travels.

just out of curiosity does anyone know if the spec on the BMW windshield has any further reinforcement than an aftermarket replacement in the event of needing to know in the future?

I know zero about windshields.

thanks

Hi, it was exactly that tunnel "Brettfalltunnel". The police saw the ice falling from the truck afterwards on the tunnel video surveillance. Unfortunately the license plate was not visible on that video.

Glad that everyone is okay. Things can be replaced...people can't.

Actually double glazing was an X5 factory option, I'd expect for very cold regions. As for an OEM windscreen, if you have the rain sensor - I don't believe there are (yet) alternatives from other glass OEM's for the E53.

Good for Helmuth that the safety glass windshield did what it is designed to do (there is a limit). I once had a similar experience with a vintage tempered windshield in an early 80's Citroen GSA. A shower of glass shards inside the car, some of which never fully came out of the ventilation system. Every week following for months I'd find some more glass bits in the floor area and would vacuum them up and work to get more out.

The replacement one was laminated. If you have a vintage car, check that it has a laminated windshield. If you have an old tempered glass windshield, find a modern laminated one - you may be thankful one day that you did.
