Transmission Range Sensor PO705
Ive gotten this intermittently the last few weeks and finally read the code. Glad to know it's just a sensor. Where is it located? Internal or External? Easy fix? If anybody has the part number handy that would be great. If not, I'll dig it up, no worries. Thanks in advance!

I wish I could help. I have no clue. Only thing I can suggest is pm RRPhil and ask him. That is by far the ZF expert to talk to.

I assume your E53 is a 4.4 V8 with you being in the US and therefore you have the ZF 5HP24 transmission :
http://www.xoutpost.com/844101-post2.html The BMW part number for the inhibitor switch is 24107512755, I believe. Phil |

Random times at start up it goes into trans fail safe. Shutting it off and on corrects it sometimes for a week, sometimes till the next stop

I have a similar intermittent fault on a 2002 4.4i .
I pulled some codes with a handheld diagnostic reader . BMW code 80 transmission switch using BMW specific scanning and also some P codes using OBD 2 scanning . I then used INPA and got this - signal AGS code 80 90 2C . I then used BMW DIS and got these - code 60 selector lever switch EGS - 3C EGS transmission switch . You can dig deeper with DIS . The link posted by RRPhil shows the " L " wires . DIS will tell you which configuration should be " open " or connected to " terminal 15 " . DIS showed me the actual configuration at the time the fault happened and in my case L1 was open when it should have been connected to terminal 15 so the L1 connection is suspect . One of the pics Phil posted shows in a blue icon which wire is connected to terminal 15 in the relevant selector position . So , in my case when in park it should have the icons at L1 L2 L4 , same as the pic but when the fault happens L1 is not making contact .

Probably also known in the industry as a Neutral Safety Switch. Had to replace one in my E34 and my Audi A6 Avant. Both were a bitch to change.
