New x5 owner

Just got the wife a 2004 X5 with 111k. My first BMW. I have been doing a little reading on these on this forum. Their are some things I have to address on it. New shocks, struts and having the gm3 module repaired. Also the vehicle only came with one key. Are their any options besides paying the dealer the $300 or more to get a new key made? I tried calling a few locksmiths to see if they did the cutting/programming and so far no luck.

Anyone know if its possible to get a couple spare keys that can be programmed to lock/unlock, and then just leave the original always in the car for starting and driving? I know it seems like a hassle, but I'm trying to budget the funds first towards the other repairs that are important. I got a pretty good deal on it because of that.

Also, any other things I should look out for on these? Engine and tranny are great, not a drop of fluid anywhere. Thanks in advance.

Congrat on the X. Did you have a PPI done? What prompt to struts/shocks replacement?
There is no other option to get a key beside the $tealer. Why would you want to leave a key in the car? Make it easy for the X to be stolen?
Your X is right at the mark for cooling system overhaul, or you can skip it and watch the temp needle like a hawk. What maintenance history does the X get?

Oh I almost forgot

Haha, no pics yet. I should take a few. What is a PPI, some sort of inspection? The wear on the inside rear tires is kind of wavey, and my mecanic suggested that its from worn shocks. Figured I'd do all 4 while I'm at it. I don't have the self leveling or air suspension, at least not that I can tell.

As far as the key, I wouldn't leave it visable in the car. I just figured if I could get a couple fobs for cheap and program them to open the doors, I could temporarily skate around the $300+ dealer key until I fix some other things.

And what should I look for as far as the cooling system overhaul besides a flush? Hopefully not a water pump just yet.

Noprops, welcome. Without a doubt, the fragile cooling systems on these cars are a definite "must replace before failure" item. Which means, if you are replacing the radiator, then the hoses, water pump and expansion tank should be done at the same time. Unless of course any one of those parts were done by the previous owner. Preventitive maintenance is key to making these cars drive a long time. Enjoy and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.

Congrats on the truck, and welcome to the forum!

As far as keys go, see this thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-thoughts.html
...It should answer some of your questions.

Your tire wear could be related to a number of factors, you may want to give the vehicle a thorough once over for any worn joints or bushings, then send it off for an alignment afterwards. Worn dampers will leave you bouncing down road.....so unless this is the case, I would suggest to look elsewhere for components causing the issue.

The above statement can't be stressed enough.... So many who are new to these trucks neglect the idea of preventative maintenance; often throwing up their arms in frustration when they have a long list of issues....and the bill associated to fix them.

Like you have been doing, take the time to read as much as you can regarding known issues with these trucks. It'll make it easier to (Hopefully) identify problems when they happen, and with any luck, also save you money in the long run.

Last but not least, if you're reliant on a mechanic for your vehicle....take the time to source one who is familiar with BMW's and has the necessary tools for proper diagnostics.

Good Luck!

Congrats on the new whip. You will find a plethora of valuable information on here. Many members are on their 3rd or even 4th X5. As far as a PPI, it is too late since you took delivery, but a lot of members suggest to others to have a Pre-Purchase Inspection done before it comes time to sign on the dotted line.

I concur with everyone on here. Preventative maintenance is key. As far as cooling overhaul, a complete overhaul includes replacing the radiator, associated hoses, expansion tank, over flow hose, heater core hoses, water pump and thermostat.

As far as rear tire wear, thats a worn bush, not likely a failed strut. Failed strut would have your back end bouncing around like a Cadillac ElDorado. At the mileage you are at, I would start checking suspension components, specifically the following.

Front: Tension Strut, Wishbone Strut, Swing Supports, Wheel carrier ball joint

Rear: Control Arm, rear swing supports.

Those are the main parts that fail first and usually set up a poor ride and uneven tire wear.

As for manufacturers, OE is always good, but expensive. There are other good options out there to save some coin. For suspension, Meyle HD components have gotten some great feedback.
