Yes if you take the cap off and you have a large amount of vacuum, to the point it is difficult to take the cap off while engine running. Or if it is a loud vacuum rushing sound then no gooda. Should be very little.

Well, in the spirit of keeping things clean and in good shape, yanked the old one out today. Fun process, to say the least. But glad I did, even though I don't recall it having strong vacuum at the cap (have left the cap off accidentally after an oil change and had it started). But hoses had ALOT of gunk. Hard to imagine any kind of airflow thru there. New one getting here tomorrow. Definitely will plan to give it a good drive on a regular basis.

Anyone know what "sufficient" time/distance is? Ive heard various numbers, one for example, is about 15-20mins for oil to reach full temp. So maybe a 10min freeway one-way and come back?

There is no simple rule of thumb. You need to get it hot, and then keep it hot long enough to boil off the moisture. How much moisture depends on the ambient temperature. How fast you boil it off depends on oil temperature.

I would start with a 30 minute drive, hot, once per week, but I would watch to see if that does it based on the paste accumulating or not.

Thanks,
I'll update this here when i do some testing. Temps are up to high 40s now, so my guess is that some of the cold spells we had is what caused the excessive build up, aside from the lack of long trips.

Although, I haven't checked for any build up after a long (8hr) trip we took. Was about to leave town for a couple of weeks a couple of days after, and thats when I saw the build up.
