That's what I would do. 02-older models used a projector housing that takes an H3. If you wanted to do HIDs, you'd only need an H11 to 9006 adapter to make it all plug and play (and error cancellers of course). I have the older style housings and they are pretty damned good.

Do H3s take the same connector as a 9006? I see H11-9006 adapters on ebay and ECS Tuning, I would love to get the older projector fog housings not even just to have HID on them but in order from an aesthetic point of view to have low beam projector and fog lights in projector housings when both are on, right now when my lows and fogs are on its so annoying to have the fogs be in a halogen housing, once you get the sharp cutoff in a projector housing whether you have halogen or HID the light output is so much nicer.

The bigger OE Valeo housing from pre-facelift E53s keeps the halogen bulb inside the housing, and the housing itself has a built-in connector that connects to the connector from the car (parts that I have mentioned in my previous post).

The smaller Valeo housing from facelift E53s has the light bulb's connector plug into the car's harness.

If you wish to go from facelift free-form halogen housing to pre-facelift projector halogen housing (and later convert the projector housing to HID), you will need to cut off the original connector from the facelift car and fit in the other connectors... The longer projector housing is watertight unit (H3 bulb does not give you watertight fit)...

on 4.8 (and probably 4.4) models, there is vent duct that gets in the way of the right bigger fog light version... not so sure about the 3.0...

Not at all. However, if you do HIDs, the ballasts use 9006 plugs. An H11 to 9006 connector will make it work perfectly.
