Is there a better transmission?

Is there a source for a better transmission than EO for E53s. One that is an upgraded, heavy duty or high performance replacement? Is it possible to retrofit a later model transmission with more gears or one that has a better reputation?

ZF transmissions are probably the best on the market.
What are you looking for? What do you need to beef up? Steve Dose @ Dose BMW (approved ZF facility) is rebuilding the ZF trannies, and he is using some updated parts for some trannies that exhibit the no-reverse syndrome. Contact him and he will probably give you very documented answer.

Don't need a transmission yet but I assume I will before long. I have 108,000mi. on the original transmission. I have all had all the Dinan mods since purchased. Also there are so many posts about transmission problems I thought we should have an alternative rather than do the same thing again. Anyone have any experience with IPT performance transmissions?

The common failure parts in the 5HP24 are pretty inexpensive and readily available................

Swap in a 6 speed manual when your auto dies. That is the only "better" option, IMO.

It is not about expense. I worry every time I drive hard, which is all the time, when it is going to break. Once it does I would like to replace it or rebuild it with something I have more faith in. I am not interested in changing it to manual shift so that is not an option.

I've heard of 5-speed manuals being converted to 6, but has anyone done an auto to manual conversion?
