Topping up tranny oil after repair?

After replacing the trans oil cooler, I estimate I am down a quart or so based on what spilled during repair.

Oil is 83220024359 factory fill and mileage is 35,000.

I understand the factory fill of my trans is ETL 8072.

I also understand the above part number has been supersceded to a Dexron VI oil.

So basically if I cannot get 8072, I can top up with a Dexron VI oil with no problems?

Are there any other oils out there compatible with 8072?

I did see the multi page thread asking about 8072 substitutes, but it seems to be for those wanting to change tranny fluid, there was no mention of compatibility of those substitutes for a top up.

If you only top off, buy it from the dealer. They should have the ATF that your X need. You need to follow proper procedure to fill ATF at correct temp range (35-55 F)
I think your X has ZF tranny. DON'T put Dexron VI in it.

Bring a container to put it in, they normally only carry it by the drum size.

TMV, I checked underneath and I have a GM tranny. BTW, how exactly is that temp measured? Test 7 at the cluster? Actual fluid temp? Somewhere on GT1?

Upallnight, yes I think I saw black pails of Texaco atf at some dealers.

I was able to get two liters from an import parts place, but they gave me Texaco ETL 7045 which I see from research is different from ETL 8072?

Temps are somewhere in live data in INPA if I am not mistaken.

There's a procedure how to top it off with GT1/DIS44. It will walk you through, monitor the ATF temp for you.
Or get an infared temp reader.

So, looking high and low for ETL 8072 but no luck.

After seeing many reports on-line of people making partial fills with Dexron VI in these trannys with no adverse results, I feel more confident in doing a Dexron VI top up.

And the fill seems simple enough, from research it looks to be as simple as getting the tranny up to operating temp, then pumping ATF into the fill hole till it trickles out.

Update:

Tranny topped up with Dex VI but still on stands because will be doing the front outer CV boots next. Took a bit less than 2 quarts.

Shifting seemed ok on the stands but of course the real test will be on the road.

Put some dishwasher detergent/water mix into the cooling system and did a few drain/refills to flush out any oil left.

Will be testing it tomorrow arter replacing the CV boots, hoping for zero drama!
