Tow Hitch (Euro spec) Loose

I have the BMW Euro spec removable tow hitch as per picture below. The problem that I have is that it is loose when fitted into the X5 and I am afraid it is going to fail/fall out/break and let my boat go flying across the road! When I first got the X5 this tow hitch fitted tight and there was zero play in the fitting, but over the years it has got looser and looser and is now unacceptably wobbly. I have looked closely for signs of wear and cannot find anything significant, except for the ball bearings at the plug end of the unit. These seem to push out when the hitch is inserted into the receptacle and I suspect that maybe they are the problem as they seem a little bit worn, but I am not sure. Basically I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and if there is any solution, short of buying a complete new hitch?
