Intro/ My new X5!

Hey Everyone!

I've been driving my 2001 330i for a while now (she's just rolled over 210,000 miles), and I'm starting to feel the itch for another 3.0 I6. I'm flying out to pick this one up next weekend- Thoughts? My only concerns are service history, brakes, and the nav screen (I'll be DIYing the replacement).

I'll be towing a 16 ft Aluminium fishing boat (less than 2000lbs with trailer), so that will be my other project before summer (if it ever comes!?!).

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Nate

Welcome & congrats! I straight up LOVE that interior!!!!

How far of a drive to you have back? Obvious things to look for would be fluid levels and any leaks or wet spots (drivers seat doesn't count) ...any immediate concern that may become an issue on a length drive.

Welcome, Nate. You must be one of the few X5 owners in Fargo, ND. Do you ever make it to the cities?

Black on tan is a very nice combo, I'd say the truck looks good from the initial pictures.

Any idea what's been replaced on it? If not, I would think about a thorough PPI from a 3rd party to get an idea of what you're working with.

You won't have any problem towing a 16' boat with the 3.0.

Are there any BMW mechanics in Fargo? There must be... make friends with them. You'll need to borrow their tools someday!

Start doing research on all of the problem areas and be ready to operate at any moment. If all checks out for now, then put miles on it. Beware in really cold weather, the E53 will start to act strange. Invest in a trickle charger if you aren't driving it daily.

Good luck...

Welcome! Nice looking truck!
If you want to tow a boat, you'll need a towing hitch ( i think someone has one for sale in Classifieds on here)

Off topic question but where did you find the plugs to plug up the holes from the roof rail delete?

I sold it yesterday.
I was actually watching this hoping it would be available after I pulled the trigger (didnt want to put the cart before the horse...).

Thanks for the warm welcome, and blatant thread-jacking

I contacted the dealer again today since it was obviously missing the cargo cover (as far as I can tell this was standard?). Apparently there is not one included. Also it would be my issue to repair the Nav Screen.

Good notes were that they give a 1000 mile, 30 day drivetrain warranty with it, it has the 19 inch rims with Michelin 245/45s (obviously based on looks, but just wanted a tire size confirmation).

As far as the PPI, I'm torn- I know I should since its a huge bargaining point, however I also know its 4 years/ 48,000 miles out of warrenty and all of my big points (cooling system, CCV, DISA, wheel bearings, and fluid exchanges) will be 'fine', as in they are all intact/ operable. They did just replace the washer pump, front CV, and did a oil change (which kind of scares me if they put a frickin fram in there).

... But a PPI should pull up BMW out of state (GA) service records correct?

I do not have a code scanner as my 330i has been remarkable reliable, but I am proactive on maintenance as I travel to MKE every month or so.

Fargo doesnt have a Bimmer dealer, but I've never had an issue with climbing under a car to do most anything, bar alignment and big suspension work.
