Replaced Amp due to water, does radio have to be reset?
I have a 2004 BMW X5 4.4i. The amp was fried due to water standing. Hopefully we have stopped the water, however not sure. I bought a replacement amp off Ebay and after installing the amp, the radio stays on for 30 seconds. Does this have to be reset by dealership or do I have another option? Thanks.

Actually I meant does the amp need recoding, not the radio. Thanks.

This is only true if the OP has the Nav Radio, which he doesn't say. If he has the regular mid/cd player there is no radio module in the back that would be causing this.

In this case, the amp will work, but it should be coded to your e53 if it didn't come from another e53 that is equipped just like yours. With your new/used amp cutting off...there's obviously an issue...not sure what it is, though.
The e38/e39/e53 uses the same amp, but it is coded according to the specific vehicle and how it is optioned. An amp for any of the aforementioned vehicles will play in the others, but the sound may be muddled & never quite as clear as it could be due to the interior dynamics and audio configuration not being the same in all the vehicles. The only way to really get around not having to recode a used amp is to get one from a BMW that is the same model as yours and is configured with the same options etc. If you have someone near you that has the equipment to communicate with all the modules in your BMW...you can give it a try...but with the amp cutting off as you mention, that kind of sounds like the normal issues of a dying amp. (just a thought)

And is the recoding something that only the dealership can do, or can an audio shop do it? Thanks.

No, a dealership is not the only place, but you will need equipment (software & hardware) that can communicate with the BMW BUS system. And you everyday audio shop probably doesn't have this since it is BMW specific.
The software/hardware is the stuff you read everyday on the forums about owners doing diagnostics with their laptop and cables that they hook up to the vehicle...which can communicate with BMW's proprietary communication bus system: ![]()
