Cool Burning Oil... I think.

Good morning to all. I am a new member to the X5 World. I have been reading all your post trying to get to know all of you and now I am submitting my first post. I hope I will be able to tap into the extensive knowledge I know most of you have on X5.

I have a 2002 X5 3.0 that I just bought. as I am driving and the motor heats up I begin to smell either burning oil or exhaust inside the cab. I have not seen any oil leaking on the ground. i am guessing the either the head gasket or the valve cover gasket is leaking onto the maifold. Does anyone have any expert advise or experience with type of issue?

Thanks for the support.

Remove the engine compartment screening and if you have any leaks you'll see spots on the ground.

Do you guys keep having to add oil in between oil changes? If so, most likely CCV needs replacing. Also should check Valve cover gasket on sides to see if you see oil residue.

Sounds like you may have oil dripping onto the exhaust - that'll give you that burning oil smell without any visible clues. My guess would be valve cover gasket......

what motor do you have?

try first looking at you gasket if it was replaced..than pop off the plastics on top of the motor and check for leaks..

Probably oil leaking through the valve cover gasket.
