Loss of Power after service. Help!

Hi,

I have just come back after spending 9 hours at the mechanics!

I had my car booked in for a full service and to have the A/C gas re-filled.

When i got the car back it was a completely different car, it has 10% of the power it used to. I tried overtaking e.g. and not enough power. It also takes far longer to change gears.

So took the car back, they thought it was the air filter, they refitted it and told me it would be ok, tested again and it was the same.

Many hours later and they thought the new fuel filter they installed was faulty so they tried fitting my old filter back. It is a bit better than they left it before but still very slow and power loss can be felt substantially.

They say that it is definitely the fuel filter and are ordering a new one to install next week.

My question is if it is indeed the fuel filter then why has power not been restored to normal when they re-fitted my old one. I asked them and they said its because they need to bleed it properly to ensure there is no air left inside.

What do you guys think? How can a routine service basically ruin my car?

Please help.

Thanks.

I have no idea why they would think it is the air filter or the fuel filter if it ran fine when you brought it in. First suspicion is that they overfilled the AC and there is too much pressure so the AC pulley is dragging the engine down. That's if you have the air on. Does it idle different with the air on than with the air off?

Second shot at this is if you know how many miles it had on it when you brought it in and how many miles when you left with it in case they ran the Texas mile event--see how fast you can go? Did they test drive it before you picked it up and not notice?

What do you call a "full service"?

What is the year, mileage, engine on your X?

If the fuel filter has to be bled, I never do that, why didn't they bleed it. If you wanted a moped you would have bought one.

Is the air filter a stock air filter?

Showing any warning lights? Did they check if there were any fault codes?

If your invoice has detail of what they did can you scan and post it?

If it's a diesel check all of the vacuum connections on the left side of the engine. It's a common fault that at least one of the hoses is left disconnected and the turbo will not spool up properly as the vacuum reservoir (small black tank on left suspension turret) is unplugged. No vacuum = reduced boost = power reduction.

The reservoir is just visible in the bottom left of this picture (black caged structure) and should be connected all the way through. Changing air filters often disturbs the vacuum lines.

UK Diesel owners have had this on so many occasions!! Of course if it's not a diesel then pass......

Ok...read your replies.

With regards to the A/C pressure i have tried with and without the A/C on and it makes no difference.

The car has power but not the same as before, it is also taking longer to change gears (its automatic).

I also cannot hear the turbos as before..It is indeed a diesel. I will check the reservoir is connected properly as suggested.

It is indeed a diesel so this could be it. I will check and report back asap.

Thanks for your help so far.

Oopsie, When you get a chance would be good if you could add year, model and mileage as a signature. I was thinking gas. Vacuum hose problem sounds like good odds, that would be easy fix. Hope you're lucky!

Yes i hope its a quick fix too! Car was fine before the service.

They also confirmed no error codes.

Can you guide me through how to check if the vacuum/gas hoses are connected properly?
