E53 3.0 Torque Converter replacement

Does anyone have a good write-up for replacing the torque converter?

I have a 2001 X5 3.0 that the torque converter went out on. I'm assuming I need to drop the transmission to replace it.

Thanks

I don't know of any write-up specific to the X5 off hand. It shouldnt be that big of a pain in the ass as there's decent clearance around which to work. Yes, you need to drop the tranny to get the TC out. It's not something I'd recommend attempting without access to a hoist though...

How heavy is the tranny? I've dropped TH350's in Chevy's before and I usually just drop it down on my chest then slide it off to the side.

Ballpark...150-200lbs? I can't see it being more.

So I replaced the torque converter and that wasn't the problem. I found a transmission on Craigslist for $675 with 70k miles on it, installed it and it's been running great.

Removing the transmission is surprisingly easy, I may post a write-up on this thread as I took pictures of the process.

What were the symptoms that you were experiencing? Hard shift? Trans fail warning? trans in limp mode?
