2003 X5 3.0i transfer case and differential

Hello everyone,

I have a 2003 X5 3.0i engine. I am about to change the tranny fluid and looking into changing the differential fluid as well. I know where the rear differential is.

Is the front differential is the same as the transfer case? If not, where is the transfer case?

The front differential is under the engine, and is the compartment that the two front axle shafts connect to.

The transfer case is bolted on the rear of the transmission, and is connected to the front differential by a driveshaft.

Are you changing transfer case fluid (your thread title) or transmission fluid (as mentioned in the body of your post)?

as JCL said above, transfer case and transmission are two different items. Transfer case is located at the rear of the trans more centrally in the car, takes about a quart of ATF if I recall correctly. Front and rear differentials take 75w-90 GEAR OIL.


Obviously the automatic trans takes ATF as well, good luck!

I am changing the tranny fluid, which I am ok with.
I am changing the rear diff, which I am ok with.

I would like to change the front diff fluid and transfer case fluid, but I don't know if they are one of the same or not.
