Do we need computer reset with new battery?

We meaning X5, E53. Read some BMW's need computer reset to tell the car charging system its a new battery??

Was going to go with Sears, but read Auto zone DUralast is made by the same Johnson controls that makes Diehard. Duralast has a bit more cold cranking than sears about the same price, $170. in Mass.

Worth using a "battery memory saver"??, no big deal to me about radio or seat memory.

04, X5, 3.0, got 9 years out of original battery. Read Douglas made the original battery? They don't make them anymore - probably can't make money if they last 9 years!!

battery died in driveway when hatchback light was left on. Used a 12volt 800ma a/c adaptor to trickle charge, after about 3 hours was THRILLED to get it to start. YES a 12v adaptor like for a toy or cordless phone - attached it to the jumper cables and on to the repeater posts under the hood.

No. Not on the E53. E70 does though.

E53 X-drive models need it for the X-drive unit when replacing the fluid. Can't think of any other resets though.

Here's an important safety tip: cover the negative and positive cables with something non-conductive (say a rubber glove) when removing and installing the battery. If you accidentally put the battery in backwards and contact the cables while swinging that 50lb pig in to position, you'll have a bad month…don't ask, just search my recent threads…

In addition, those stupid T-bolts that clamp the cables are stainless steel, as are the nuts. The threads will gall with too many uses, so do the next owner a favor and put some copper anti seize on the bolts. If you happen to snap one or both of the T-bolts (here's that 'don't ask' bit again), you can get replacements, but they are VW or Audi 22mm T-bolts. I got mine at Rocky Mountain European Auto. Not cheap, but cheaper than an entire new cable assembly, especially the positive leg!

Good luck!

no memory saver either - just pull the old battery out, drop the new battery in, mind the polarity, and off you go... memory saver may confuse the module beyond the point of no return...
