Weird noise near the trunk?!

So, I've had this stupid noise at the back of my X5 for how many years since I've owned my 04 X5. Anyway, whenever I go over a bump or train tracks theres like this "click" noise. Its awful especially on those bad roads you can hear the click click click on the bumps. I had it at the dealer many times and thought the noise was under the car but I know its somewhere near the trunk. I had someone take the plastic trim around the glass on the inside at the trunk but still no fix has anyone had this problem???

could be many things....Trunk stoppers, springs pads, rear cargo covers.....

a lot of ppl seem to have success with adjusting the 2 stopper pads, or just buying the new updated version which is spring loaded, OR the glass hatch gate latch strikes the metal holster it goes into, so people put felt on the black latch. LOTS of topics on this, just do a search.

time to pinpoint the source - have somebody drive the car, sit in the back seat (or, better yet, in trunk), and listen... once you have general location, start digging deeper to further narrow the location... if by then you do not resove the issue, post it back here for the collective wisdom...

Do you have a spare tire with jack under the cargo floor? Mine was rattling so I wrapped a towel around the tip of the jack where it was tapping on the sheet metal and the noise went away.

What type of sound (click click click) is it? Is it an electronic type of click...or is it a mechanical type of click...or is it a physical type of click?

If physical, then as car girl mentions, check all of the tools & stuff around the spare and the spare itself to make sure all are secure and not moving around making noises as you drive over bumps.

If mechanical or electrical...the suggestion to have someone ride in the back (remove the cargo floor if possible) and have them try to pinpoint where the sound is coming from.

If you don't have the SLS rear suspension, it could be mechanical noises from shocks/struts & their mounting system...the e30 3 series was notorious for the rear strut mounts ripping and you'd get a clicking sound as the strut pushed upwards when driving over bumps...or perhaps something in the rear suspension or the rear hub or brakes is making a clicking noise that is reverberating into the cabin.

There are multiple control modules located around the spare, perhaps one of them is making an electrical clicking noise...again, having someone ride in back with the cargo floor removed might help pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

I heard the noise in my X5 a couple times. It's like a relay type noise in mine and reminds me of a click clack like something moving one way, then back the other way.

Best way to address the noise is to crank up the Premium Sound System and jam to your favorite tunes! All joking aside, this new car has all sorts of new noises. Not sure why BMW thought it was ok to design it this way but it is somewhat annoying.

I have to jump in the trunk and have hubbie drive in our neighborhood to isolate the sound. He says I have bionic ears, otherwise I'd drive. If I find anything, I'll come back and post.

i am on a mission on this also the trunk noise and ,the boss ) (wife) said that she had enough of the trunk noise,so this next weekend i will try to see what the problem is!

i have did something before ,from reading in this forum, i have put some sticky pads that you put under the chairs so you don't scratch the floors,and i notice that it quite down ,but she said it did not, well i guess i need to go in the trunk and someone to drive ,to hear where is coming from.

those stoppers ,when i looked last time ,before i put those sticky pads ,they where look like the adjusting screw was coming Thur the rubber out or the rubber was going down...

one question for someone that does not have the noise ,to measure how far out
are the left and right stoppers?

i have called the dealer to see about the stoppers and they said that they are 48$ each part number 7171558 (i think is part 51247171557)
but i cant see anywhere that part online.

also where to buy those "spring loaded" stoppers? any part number for those?

I stumbled upon a possible fix in another x forum. If you have the rear cargo cover in the extended position, the cargo shade edge that run along the right and left sides of the trunk space tap on the track where the shade follows the track, the noise appears. The fix is to install a foam strip or gasket of some sort, along the bottom edge of the track.

I haven't tried retracting mine so the cargo space is open. I've been driving around with the shade in the extended position and started noticing the noise. Today, I was planning to retract the shade to see if the problem disappeared but I completely forgot about doing so until I heard the noise again just as I was pulling into my street after work when I got home. I'll have to try tomorrow.
