DIY to replace timing chain guide on M54 I6?

I have the head off my 2001 X5 3.0i to replace the head gasket and discovered the stationary timing chain guide (the one opposite the primary chain tensioner) is broken into two pieces. From what I can tell, the timing cover has to come off to replace it. But to do that, according to TIS, the oil pan has to come off. Which is complicated by the frikkin drive shaft that goes through it. Which isn't even mentioned in TIS. Surely there's an easier way to get this done without pulling the engine!

It looks to me like I can just remove the bolts at the front of the oil pan and the timing cover should slide out. Or is there a better way?

Can somebody point me to a DIY for the job (I looked but couldn't find one).
